The State of Magnesium

The United States currently imports over 90% of its magnesium supply, making it highly dependent on other countries for this critical mineral. China alone provides over 80% of US magnesium imports. This heavy reliance on foreign magnesium creates major vulnerabilities and threats to America's economic and national security.

There are several reasons why it is critical for the US to begin mining and producing magnesium domestically:

Having to import so much magnesium makes the US economy vulnerable to supply disruptions, trade disputes, and price fluctuations. For example, if China cut off magnesium exports to retaliate against US policies, it could cripple many American manufacturing industries that require the metal. Developing domestic magnesium resources would provide a reliable and stable supply for US companies. This would strengthen economic security and resilience.

Magnesium has many defense and military applications, including aircraft and missile production. Relying on potentially adversarial nations like China and Russia for critical defense materials is extremely dangerous. If imports were cut off during a conflict, it could severely hamper US military readiness and capabilities. Domestically produced magnesium would be vital for national security.

Currently, the US magnesium industry is very small and unable to meet domestic demand. Developing a robust domestic magnesium sector would create many high-paying American jobs in mining, refining, and manufacturing. This would keep money circulating in the US economy. An American magnesium industry would support technology innovation and provide economic opportunities.

Shipping magnesium long distances overseas has a significant carbon footprint and subsequent costs that go with it. Mining and refining magnesium domestically would greatly reduce the emissions and pollution associated with transportation. This would help the US meet its climate goals and environmental commitments. Domestic production is much more sustainable.

The Covid-19 pandemic exposed major weaknesses in global supply chains. Diversifying magnesium production domestically would strengthen US supply chain resilience for the long term. Instead of relying on concentrated production, domestic magnesium mining would decentralize and localize supply chains. This is more secure and less prone to disruption. 

Overall, reducing reliance on imported magnesium by developing domestic production capabilities should be a top priority. It is critical for both the US economy and national security. An American magnesium industry would create jobs, support innovation, reduce emissions, and strengthen the country. As global competition heats up, the US can't afford to be so dependent on other nations for this invaluable mineral. The federal government should enact policies to incentivize domestic magnesium mining and build a secure supply chain.
